Restored Georgian Estate

Case Studies
Restored Georgian Estate

In the substantial restoration of a large Georgian estate built for and inhabited by the aristocracy, high performance timber sash windows, French doorsets and entrance doors by Mumford & Wood have been used throughout the grand house and numerous outbuildings which span different periods.

Conservation™ box sash windows with traditional cords, weights and pulleys, many with complex arched or curved top frames made by Mumford & Wood, are factory finished and double glazed.  Of totally traditional design they benefit from modern manufacturing techniques, are highly energy efficient and fully compliant with Part L Building Regulations.

Curved on plan French doorsets and windows have been used in this project which entails a high degree of skill and labour and relies on the accuracy of original drawings created by either an architect or by Mumford & Wood’s own surveyors.  A bespoke CAD/CAM package generates the original processes to produce each curved part.  “This is important as we strive to create the same standard of finish on the curved on plan products as we do on our standard flat product which is done by achieving straight grain on all faces,” comments a senior spokesperson at Mumford & Wood.  “In essence we have to create ten curved parts for a non-bar sash window regardless of height or width.”

Many CAD programmes are required to turn each curved blank into a finished component and a computer generated simulation is a double-check fail safe precaution.  Only then will Mumford & Wood’s technicians run the programme to produce the essential components, a process that requires nil tolerance of accuracy.

“There was a time when the part produced was as good as the craftsman who drew the rod, but we wouldn’t take that risk.  With our high tech machinery we are 100% accurate first time and we are certain that each part produced thereafter will be exactly the same.”  The parts are then assembled and follow the same manufacturing processes and hand finishing as all other made-to-order Mumford & Wood products. “So, we can be sure that our traditional and historic products not only look the part but will meet today’s exacting performance standards for sustainability, insulation, acoustics and security, and will be delivered on time using state of the art manufacturing techniques and equipment.”
