Window restoration for historic borough

In the renovation of a substantial property in London SE1, in the historic Borough of Southwark, Mumford & Wood, specialists in the design and manufacture of premium quality timber windows and doors, have supplied Conservation™ casement windows and sliding sash windows for a sensitive renovation.  This mixed use building was one of the last remaining plots awaiting development by morelondon.

Situated in a conservation area only minutes from Tower Bridge and in view of The Tower of London, a dialogue between modern and traditional architecture has been created.  The period terraced building, a fragment of a former landscape, on the corner of Tooley Street, known as The Terrace, appears to be conjoined with a contemporary structure more in keeping with the new commercial spaces of more london’s development strategy.

High performance timber windows supplied for the skilful renovation of The Terrace, which is not listed, replace single glazed originals and considerable adaptation to achieve fine and elegant sight lines by Mumford & Wood was of significant importance and a key element of the brief from Hawkins/Brown Architects, London

“Several exchanges of drawings with the architect and modifications to our standard sections were required before all parties were happy,” says Paul Martin, marketing manager, Mumford & Wood Ltd.  “We had to replicate the original product working with casements of ascending size together with fixed windows set within stone mullions.  Many of these casements are shaped which makes it a very bespoke project.”  Another adjacent section of The Terrace has replacement Conservation™ sliding sash windows also manufactured by Mumford & Wood.  The building is a combination of renovation and new build with retained, refurbished and new facades.
