New timber windows for Cheltenham Ladies' College

Replacement period-style timber windows and doors from Mumford & Wood’s award-winning Conservation™ range have been specified by architects Evans Jones LLP of Cheltenham in the refurbishment of junior boarding houses at Cheltenham Ladies’ College.

The College, which was founded in 1853, is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11 – 18 years.  The College has been at the forefront of girls’ education for over 150 years and has a worldwide reputation for academic excellence.  One of the College’s earliest Principals was a prominent suffragette educator who also founded St Hilda’s College, Oxford.

Main contractor Cabot Developments, Gt Dunmow, Essex, has undertaken the challenging window installation of over 300 replacement timber sash and casement windows alongside a wider refurbishment programme which included roof repairs and external decoration.

Manufactured from engineered, knot-free and sustainably sourced timber, high specification Conservation™ sash windows are designed to replicate timber sliding sashes in older buildings while lending a traditional appearance to new build properties.  Offering a combination of classic period style together with the latest timber window technology, these bespoke double glazed windows provide excellent thermal and acoustic performance and improved security.  Exceeding the requirements of current Part L Building Regulations these beautiful windows carry the BSI Kitemark and Secured by Design accreditations.  They are Energy Saving Trust recommended and provide an overall frame U-value of 1.3 W/m²K, depending on specification.  Box linings to match the originals have been supplied with the Conservation™ sash windows to achieve a wide external frame.

Mumford & Wood’s Conservation™ sashes are available with a choice of deep moulded internal profiles and a selection of matching ovolo, lamb’s tongue and fine lamb’s tongue glazing bar profiles to provide a truly elegant appearance with traditional sightlines.  The sash operates smoothly and easily with pre-tensioned spring balances.

In addition, a horizontal pivot Conservation™ casement window, designed and manufactured especially for the Cheltenham Ladies’ College project, provides a perfect match with the original casements.  These windows pivot centrally at the midway point on the height of the window.  A new hinge system has been designed and sourced and the window is fully weather tested.

The College has occupied its current location on the site of the Cheltenham spa since the early 1900s.  Today, Cheltenham Ladies’ College offers highly developed and greatly expanded facilities which are enjoyed by the College community of the 21st Century.
