Light fantastic to Essex new build

Traditional-style timber windows and doors from the Conservation™ range by Mumford & Wood have been specified for an impressive new-build property in the much sought after village of Danbury in Essex.  The village dates back to medieval times and today has extensive woodland and heath owned by the National Trust and other conservation organisations.

Stephen and Sophie purchased the generous plot of land in 2012 with the aim to build their first property, which is now complete.  “We lived in the old bungalow which nestled in the middle of the grounds plotting where the sun rose and set during the seasons,” say the proud homeowners. “Our aim was to maximise light throughout the house which meant windows and doors with generous proportions and double and triple aspect rooms.”  The property follows a classic, traditional design suited to the surrounding architecture and required a sympathetic design of fenestration.

“A good friend introduced us to Mumford & Wood and being a local business the company offered many benefits,” continues Stephen.  “As with most of the materials in this build we have, where possible, worked with local suppliers, businesses and service providers.  It makes good sense to support local industry.”

A coordinated collection of double glazed Conservation™ products have been incorporated in this fabulous property including casement windows; full and part-glazed French doorsets; stunning four-leaf, non-bar, bi-folding doors which truly link the house and garden; a traditional and beautifully crafted solid timber entrance door with a part-glazed inner porch door for extra warmth and security.  A large fixed pane unit consisting of six glazed panels to the rear of the property opens up the picture-perfect stair well, landing and hall which is now flooded with natural light.

“Planning and designing these windows and doors was part of the pleasure of shopping locally with Mumford & Wood,” says Sophie.  “We visited the Tiptree showroom several times before and during the two year build and we benefited greatly with the technical advice we received.  It was invaluable and it helped us to make many design decisions.  Site meetings and aftercare were first class, from start to end.  In direct comparison to the old bungalow and the new house we can definitely appreciate the improved levels of sound and insulation which are excellent and the windows enhance our views even more.”

Conservation™ timber windows and doors are manufactured entirely in Britain from clear grade, engineered timber, predominantly Larch or Red Grandis, together with Mahogany, all of which is FSC certified.  Made to the British Woodworking Federation’s Wood Window Alliance standards Conservation™ windows and doors are BRE A+ rated. They are factory finished with high performance double glazed units that offer the lowest U-values, outperforming the requirements of current Building Regulations, and achieve ultimate levels of thermal and acoustic performance.  They are internally glazed for improved aesthetics and security.  Many Conservation™ products are Secured by Design accredited, carry the BSI Kitemark and are Energy Saving Trust listed.  They are delivered to site with three coats of high quality spray-applied micro-porous paint or stain as standard.

“We’ve received many lovely comments about the house since it was completed and many are about the dual colours of the windows in RAL 7038 Agate Grey externally and Mumford & Wood 9003 internally,” says Sophie.  “Colour is such a big decision which we agonised over but we are delighted with our choice.”
