Georgian masterpiece

Mumford & Wood’s Georgian-style box sash windows and doors have been incorporated in a beautiful Georgian new build residence in South Oxfordshire. Designed and built by Brookes Cavendish, a developer specialising in individually designed large residential properties on beautiful sites in the Thames Valley, this unique country home has been created to the finest classical design principles and architectural form. Every aspect of this 9,000sqft building has been thoroughly researched and replicated to achieve a truly magnificent home with 21st Century standards of performance, service and sustainability.

Surrounded by endless countryside, but within striking distance of London and Oxford, the property features bespoke double glazed floor-to-ceiling Georgian-style box sash windows from Mumford & Wood’s Conservation™ range which have been specified throughout. Elegant French doorsets provide light and easy access to the beautifully proportioned landscaped terraces that lead to the swimming pool and spa complex.

Director and architect Henry Smith, says: “A great deal of research has gone into this home. It has been a challenge and a labour of love but we have created a grand replica Georgian residence that we are immensely proud of. Every feature has been faithfully recreated from the elegant cornices and architraves, to the hand carved marble and stone fireplaces, and the patterned oak floors and panelling in the principle rooms.

“The large pane sash windows and doorsets are totally authentic of traditional Georgian window design and their floor-to-ceiling heights meet the immense scale of these spectacular rooms that follow a strict rule of proportion.”

An elegant double entrance door with overhead fanlight leads to a breath taking entrance hall and a staircase to the upper floor and galleried landing, as well as stairs leading down to the lower ground floor. A substantial Conservation™ French doorset to the rear completes the vista. The entire stair well, hall and landing are bathed in natural light from a large timber roof lantern also designed and manufactured by Mumford & Wood as a special order.

“We are proud to be associated with this very beautiful home,” says Tom Barfield, sales director, Mumford & Wood. “Aesthetically these windows and doors would have looked exactly like this in the Georgian era with their fine detail and mouldings and today they provide the same visual enhanced with exceptional levels of thermal and acoustic performance which will contribute to the comfort of the homeowner, the control of heating costs and the property’s CO₂ emissions. These are very important considerations with windows and doors of such large proportions.”

Conservation™ windows and doors, which are Energy Saving Trust listed and exceed the requirements of Part L Building Regulations, are manufactured from sustainably sourced and FSC certificated timber which is engineered for maximum strength and stability. They are made in the UK to the exacting standards of the British Woodworking Federation’s Timber Window Accreditation Scheme and achieve a BSI Window Energy Rating up to ‘A’. They are fully factory finished with three coats of water-based, spray applied, micro-porous paint or stain as standard which contributes to longer maintenance cycles, and are available in a wide range of RAL and heritage paint colours. A duo-colour finish is also available. Products are internally glazed for improved aesthetics and security and many products are Secured by Design accredited. All carry the BSI Kitemark of distinction.

The property benefits from underfloor heating, with wood-burning stoves in many rooms, a beautifully appointed kitchen and grand bathrooms, a plant room with ground source heat pump and a ventilation system that provides energy efficient heat recovery. A dumb waiter and laundry chute have been installed linking to the upper and lower ground floor where there is a cinema room, guest suites, wine cellar and a further kitchen.
