Converted Grain Store

Case Studies
Converted Grain Store

A stunning Grade II listed property sitting in a peaceful, picturesque village in Essex has seen a complete transformation by the Collins family.

Originally built in 1799 by farmers to store grain during the Napoleonic wars and formerly part of the Braxted Park Estate, the Collins purchased the property in 2011 and undertook a large scale, 3-year project to transform it from a ‘complete wreck’ into their family home.

After purchasing the property, it took a year to fully satisfy the requirements set out by the local conservation authority. Mr Collins comments "There were 39 different hurdles that we had to overcome before any building work could commence. For example, all of the windows had to be finished in Black to complement the oak and original beams."

"This project has been a labour of love!"

An architect was brought onto the project to help design many features of the rebuild. With the property being situated in a lovely countryside setting, many of the windows have been designed to take in the picturesque surroundings. Whilst this provided the builders with quite a challenge initially, the end result is truly outstanding.

The property also has an old cart lodge which has now been converted into a self-contained guest annex as well as the old stables being converted into a home gym. ‘We retained as many of the original features and beams as we could’, Mr Collins comments.

"The quality of the products is top notch. Mumford & Wood are only down the road from here so the service throughout and after-care has been excellent" Mr Collins goes on to explain.

The end result is stunning, with French doors, casement windows, tilt & turn windows and a stable door from the Mumford & Wood Conservation range giving this historic grain store a new lease of life as well as giving the Collins a home to be proud of.
