How long have you been based in Essex?
Mumford & Wood has been based in Essex since the company’s inception in 1954, initially in Brentwood, then in Ongar, and in 1998 we relocated to our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Tiptree, Essex.
Do you make everything in your Tiptree factory?
Yes, absolutely everything with the exception of high quality, architectural ironmongery, of which we offer a choice of beautiful designs and finishes. Glazing units are also supplied, and we apply a high performance micro-porous paint or stain, which achieves long maintenance schedules, dual colour where specified, which is also purchased in. Recent investment approaching £1.5m will ensure that everything we produce sets an industry benchmark and puts us ahead of current requirements in Building Regulations and other regulatory schemes.
Is it important to you to make everything in Britain?
Absolutely, and we are very proud of our heritage. We import premium grade timber which is also housed here in our timber store. It is selected for grain and consistency, knot free and engineered for ultimate strength and stability, before following a series of manufacturing processes. Along with massive recent investment on new plant and equipment, our skilled craftsmen and women do a fabulous job on intricate detail work and special features including bay windows, curved on plan and special shapes.
You’ve been established since 1954, why do you think you have lasted so long in the business?
We have become established as the leading timber window and door manufacturer. Quite simply our product is aesthetically superior with excellent thermal and acoustic performance. Nevertheless we continue to strive for even better standards in everything we do, including ever improving levels of security. Our service, from initial contact through to delivery, is highly rated amongst architects, developers and homeowners and we continue to follow a service-excellence ethos. We know our customers are King and that they always have a choice.
