Wooden Sash Windows in London Hotel

Together with this quirky appearance, Mumford & Wood’s double glazed, timber Conservation™ box sash windows and doors have been incorporated in the restoration of this substantial building. Artist Residence London, which also has successful businesses in Brighton and Penzance, offers a lower ground floor bar with private dining room and a busy ground floor open plan restaurant. Ten individually designed and dressed bedrooms over three floors include a converted loft suite and a grand suite.

Previously the venue of a popular but run down public house, the building required a complete refurbishment by the owners Charlotte Newey and Justin Salisbury.  Upper floors, previously used as staff quarters, were in poor condition and the basement was a vast cellar offering industrial-sized space.  Planning permission to convert the building and to install replacement windows was achieved and main contractor Ashbridge Building & Maintenance Services, Surrey undertook the project in August 2013.

Mumford & Wood’s Conservation™ box sash windows, finished in white, were specified by Child Graddon Lewis, architects and designers, Spitalfields, London E1 replacing inefficient single glazed windows of a more simple design.  These high performance engineered timber windows and doors provide superb thermal and acoustic performance whilst reproducing authentic period style.  Two exceptionally tall entrance doors at street level, one providing access to the hotel and the other to the restaurant, as well as windows to the restaurant have been replaced and finished using Mumford & Wood’s colour service to match the venue’s interior and exterior façade in dark grey.

Made-to-order Conservation™ products, a fully coordinated collection of sash and casement windows, French doorsets, bi-folding and entrance doors, special shapes and fixed glazed panels, combine modern manufacturing technology with superior aesthetics and has earned the brand award-winning status.  Conservation™ products are manufactured in accordance to the British Woodworking Federation’s Wood Window Alliance standards and achieve exceptional U-values that far exceed the requirements of current Part L Building Regulations’ and are BRE A+ rated.

All products are internally glazed for added security and the new colour match and dual colour paint, or stain, facility is a popular option.  The company uses only high quality, spray-applied, micro-porous finishes that provide durable, low maintenance protection.  Manufactured from the finest clear grade and sustainably sourced timber, Mumford & Wood’s Conservation™ windows and doors have an expected life of between 55-65 years. They also carry the BSI Kitemark, are Energy Saving Trust listed, and many products carry Secured by Design accreditation.

A substantial part of the refurbishment involved stripping the space back to bare bricks and reworking the walls to their current condition.  In the basement the floor was lowered to improve ceiling heights, a damp proof membrane and concrete slabs installed and polished to an eye-catching design floor finish.  Substantial arched doorsets designed by Mumford & Wood provide access to a small paved terrace.  A pitched pine parquet floor has been laid in the grand suite which benefits from natural light from two beautiful 6-over-6 pane front-facade Conservation™ box sash windows while the loft suite, with its revealed pitched roof, exposed brick walls, reclaimed wood flooring and open plan bathroom, features smaller 3-over-3 pane Conservation™ box sash windows.
