'GEORGIANS' DELIGHTED
*
Georgian-style timber sash windows, doorsets and entrance doors by Mumford & Wood have been used in the renovation of an elegant London terraced town house. This is a fine example of how a modern double glazed timber window, with faithfully reproduced historical detail, can be successfully embraced into a sensitive period renovation where uniformity and consistency of design is imperative.

*
The 18th Century was a time of great urban growth and the density of settlement in towns meant that there was a need to pack a great many houses into a small space. This need gave birth to the terrace which allowed a whole street to be given a sense of architectural wholeness while keeping the houses relatively compact. Most were characteristically four stories high with the most import rooms on the first floor. Entrance doors were panelled, with an overhead fanlight, and accessed by a short flight of stairs from pavement level.
Windows in Georgian town houses were almost exclusively sash windows, in which Mumford & Wood specialises, made of standardized panes of glass divided by thin, delicate wooden glazing bars. Traditionally, the pattern of window was the same throughout: ground floor windows were kept short for stability of the house structure while first or second floor windows were taller and elegantly expansive, and the upper floor windows became progressively smaller and squarer.

frontMumford & Wood’s modern, Kitemarked and factory finished double glazed sash windows and doorsets are perfect for projects in which all the benefits of a modern window are combined with the aesthetic attributes of the architectural period. These windows offer a high thermal performance with energy ratings ranging from C to A depending on size and specification while entrance doors meet the Enhanced Security ratings of PAS24 in the progression toward Secure by Design accreditation. Acoustic glass is available as an optional extra from a wide selection of glazing options to create a totally modern and bespoke, high performance fenestration system.

A fitting and installation service is also available from Mumford & Wood Installations Ltd through a Register of approved and fully trained installers who will complete the project with full guarantees. Of great benefit in period projects, this facility will handle site assessments and obtain all building consent and approvals.
