21st Century Timber Window Conference

Mumford & Wood has played a leading part at the one-day ‘21st Century Timber Windows’ conference organised by the British Woodworking Federation and the Timber Windows Accreditation Scheme (TWAS). Chaired by Ruth Slavid, acting editor of the Architects’ Journal, the event acted as an open forum for speakers and delegates.
A keynote speech from Jon Aldenton, CEO of the Environment Trust, hailed timber as the building material of the future while Jane Anderson, author of BRE’s Green Guide, presented results of the latest research into timber window durability. It identified the extended service life of timber windows to a minimum of 35 years for accredited TWAS windows.
Other presentations were delivered by the Construction Products Association and, posing the view from an architect’s perspective, guest speaker Chris Bannister, Director of Hopkins Architects, centred on the practices most recent and exemplary environmental projects in which timber windows have been used.
“This has been a refreshing day in which zero carbon and sustainability issues have stolen the show,” says Roy Wakeman, Executive Chairman of the newly formed The Performance Window Group of which Mumford & Wood is a member company. “And there’s more to come when the Green Guide imminently publishes results of a Life Cycle Assessment to identify final ratings, and there is a new industry initiative coming together which will promote the benefits of modern timber windows.”
Mumford & Wood, a member of the TWAS, was a main sponsor of the event and was well represented. The company displayed a selection of premium products including a Conservation box sash window, Conservation entrance doorset and a tilt/turn window from the Contemporary collection. Chris Wood, Sales & Marketing Director, was present and acknowledged the shared belief that the timber window industry needs to be more flexible in its approach if the industry is to be successful in making timber windows the preferred choice.
